For Valentine's Day

I think I'm in an abusive relationship. My gal is alternately an early Spring or late Fall day. Sometimes things seem to be going so badly between us it's like I've been abandoned, all alone, on the center of Mille Lacs Lake in the middle of January. My gal will then come "pick me up", treat me well and make me feel as if I'm riding on top of the world - like an early Spring thaw in that otherwise bitterly cold Minnesota winter. Of course, she'll eventually insist on treating me like a harsh March snowstorm; letting me know that she's still in charge and, like the groundhog who never sees his shadow, summer will still be a long while in arriving. Other times, things are going great between us, but now it's like late Fall. I just know "winter" is coming and she never fails to let me know that life's warm victories are easily replaced by frosty nights. It's like I can't win for losing with her. I don't know if it's bi-polar disorder, wanton cruelty or something else. All I do know is that she'll invariably rotate from treating me like a King to treating me like a pauper - moving from giving me what I want and need to taunting me and denying me everything. I think I'm in an abusive relationship, and, my girl's name is "Variance". The Internationality of Poker

I was playing a No-Limit Hold ‘em Tourney on FullTilt recently and was struck by the international flair that poker has – especially online. It struck me as the first table I was at had me as the only American. The rest of the players consisted of a Spaniard, Croat, Australian, Greek, two Ukrainians and a player each from Switzerland and the Phillipines. As we continued to play the tournament I was ultimately moved to two more tables (before finally busting out). Americans were never in the majority on any of the tables (including replacements being moved in after others busted out). My second table eventually saw the most players from the U.S. overall (with several getting moved in after eliminations) with me and 5 others, but it included a Dutchman, Russian, Brit, Latvian, Italian, Austrian and two Germans while I was there. In the end – through three tables and a good chunk of the tournament I saw the following representation: United States: 9 (including me) Germany – 3 Russia – 2 Ukraine – 2 Netherlands – 2 And, 1 each from: Australia Austria Croatia Greece Italy Finland Latvia New Zealand Phillipines Spain Switzerland U.K. Total players: 30 – 9 from U.S., 21 from the World It’s truly amazing how widely spread the popularity of poker has reached. And, another upside is that I can occasionally practiced my Czech (though I try not to do that for too long so no complains about “English Only” at the table). Take a look next time you’re online – my guess is you’ll see an veritable international bazaar. Milestone Reached - 100 Episodes

MN Poker Mag recently posted on the milestone of reaching one million page views. For us, it took a while, but we finally recorded our 100th Poker Podcast Episode this past Saturday. Annie Duke and Phil Hellmuth done with UB

Apparently, rumors have a way of turning out to be true in the online poker world. A while ago, some avid poker forum members over at the 2+2 have noticed that Phil Hellmuth was no longer wearing his UB patch at the events in which he was playing. The obvious speculation was that Hellmuth and UB were about to part ways. In the waning days of 2010, those speculations did indeed turned out to be well founded. In a blog post, UB pro Joe Sebok made the news public: both Annie Duke and Phil Hellmuth would leave UB. Sebok thanked the two for having stuck it out through hell and high water for UB for the last few years and wished them well in their future ventures. Of the two parties concerned, Duke and Hellmuth are probably the side that has the less to worry about the future. Professional players of outstanding caliber, they both maintained their dignity and handled the situation wonderfully amid the cheating scandals that rocked the brand they represented. They are both outstanding members of the live poker community and it’s rather difficult to think of an online poker interest that wouldn’t want them or their kind aboard. On the other hand, their departure leaves UB at a crossroads. The two players who had basically become the faces of the brand for better and for worse are gone, at a time when the company could more than use their help. Quick to attempt to rebound, UB has already announced that it was going to add new names to its professional roster during the first week of the New Year. I do however reckon that they would have to sign an awfully big name in order to efficiently offset the loss they just suffered. Whether the company will turn this setback into an opportunity to take a step forward, or whether it’ll just fade back into the sunset remains to be seen. After all the blows they’ve taken in recent years, it’s quite an accomplishment that they’re still alive and kicking as it is…
